Two months before the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Games, our team traveled to the mountains of PyeongChang, South Korea to document Intel's drone light show created specifically for the Opening Ceremony.
The Shooting Star drones took to the skies through nine frigid nights, flying test run after test run, culminating in over 1,200 drones forming the iconic Olympic Rings. We created this short film to document the Intel Drone Team's journey, proving not every team at the Opening Ceremony flies a national flag.
The event itself was a huge success for not only winter sports and the competing nations of the world but also INTEL had a significant share of voice—we were by far the most talked about brand over the event. From mainstream media networks showcasing our achievement but across all social media channels too. The achievement is documented in the below film.
We documented the entire experience from start to finish and everything BTS—all to be used for social, sometimes teased out that drones would feature and also real time at the Winter Olympics.
Quick social assets in the form of gifs that helped to showcase the stunning drone choreography.
Due to the nature of what we were documenting we captured some stunningly artful long exposure pieces. We shot with specialist photographer Dave Lehl for these.
Beyond the 12 billion media impressions (in under 12 live hours) this record breaking experience garnered some considerable industry love with a few shiny gongs. To date it has been awarded:
x2 D&AD pencils (Graphite & Wooden)
x6 Cannes Lions (4 gold, 2 silver, 11 shortlist and a Titanium shortlist)
x4 Clios (3 gold, 1 silver)
x2 One Show pencils
x1 Andys (Gold)
x2 AICP Awards
